Nitrous Oxide

Do you or one of your family members have a fear of the dentist? If so, you’re not alone. It’s completely normal to be anxious about taking a trip to the dentist’s office.

At the Marconi Dental Group, we promise to make your visit as pleasant as possible. Still, we recognize some patients need a little something extra.

That’s why for specific patients, we might recommend the use of nitrous oxide.

What Is Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide, known commonly as “laughing gas,” has been used in medicine for decades. It is colorless, with a slightly sweet odor, and it is used to provide a feeling of well-being in patients.

If your dentist recommends administering nitrous oxide, you’ll receive conscious sedation, meaning you’ll stay awake throughout the procedure. We’ll use local anesthetic to prevent you from feeling any pain, and the nitrous oxide will remove your anxiety.

In fact, many patients who receive nitrous oxide don’t even remember the procedure once it’s complete.

The Procedure

So, how does it work?

A trained professional will place a mask over your nose. This mask will distribute a mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen. After a few minutes, you might experience a tingling feeling in your hands and feet. You might start to feel like you’re floating. You’ll still be awake and in control, but you will no longer feel fear and anxiety.

After identifying that the gas is working, your dentist will confirm that you’re ready for the procedure to continue. This may include providing local anesthetic.

Once your dentist has completed the procedure, the flow of nitrous oxide will gradually be reduced. You’ll be free to relax in your chair as the effects of the gas begin to wear off. After just a few minutes, you’ll be back to normal and ready to return to normal activities.

If you’re serious about your health, and the health of your family, staying away from the dentist is not an option! That’s why conscious sedation with nitrous oxide may be the answer you’re looking for.
