Tooth Contouring

When you look at your smile, is there a small flaw or imperfection you wish you could change? It might be a very small chip, a pointy tooth, or a tooth that doesn’t look like the others.

When it comes to small features like these, there’s a simple, quick, and effective dental procedure that could make a big change in your appearance: Tooth contouring.

What Is Tooth Contouring?

Tooth contouring is a special technique our Sacramento dentists use to shape a tooth. Using a lase or drill, the dentist removes a small amount of tooth enamel, sculpting the tooth into a more attractive shape. Then, the dentist polishes the tooth to a smooth finish.

At the Marconi Dental Group, we use tooth contouring to help address a variety of cosmetic problems including:

  • Chipped or uneven teeth
  • Flattened or pointy tooth edges
  • Minor bite problems

Tooth contouring can be combined with other dental procedures such as dental bonding, tooth whitening, or veneers to improve the overall appearance of the teeth.

Additionally, adjusting the shape of a tooth can actually lower your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This is because depending on the shape of your teeth, it may be very difficult to clean, making it extremely easy for tartar and plaque to build up. Tooth contouring can help make these areas easier to keep clean, leading to better oral health.

The Procedure

In most cases, when shaping your tooth your dentist will only remove a very small bit of enamel (the hard material that serves as the surface of your tooth).

First, the dentist will use a special pen to mark your tooth, singling out the areas he or she wants to sculpt. Then, they will use an instrument to gently reshape the tooth. Finally, the tooth is smoothed and polished to achieve a natural look.

In most cases, the entire process is complete within a half hour. The results are immediately visible—and the benefits can last a lifetime!
