The Perfect Age for Braces

“Am I too old for braces?”
“Is my child old enough for an orthodontic consult?”
“Which type of orthodontics is right for someone my age?”

If you’re considering getting braces or have been putting them off, you might be wondering whether or not there’s a perfect age for starting the process. In reality, it all boils down to the type of braces that you have in mind, your current oral health, and how old you or your child are.

Here are a few things to consider:

Braces for Children

Orthodontic experts recommend a screening for all children by age 7. Dr. Alizadeh includes the bite assessment as part of every exam in our Carmichael office. Some of the things that come into play are the eruption patterns of your child’s bite, their jaw development, and habits such as thumb sucking.

Generally, once a child needs braces, Dr. Alizadeh will recommend traditional orthodontics. Not only are these effective, they’re also an economical option for parents. There’s also no risk of your child losing a removable aligner. Plus, conventional orthodontics can be preceded by other types of appliances like a space maintainer, expander, or lower lingual arch to encourage proper oral development prior to wearing braces.

Braces for Teens

By the time your child is a teen, you need to start considering things like developing wisdom teeth, maturity, oral hygiene habits, and their self-esteem. If all of their adult teeth have erupted, there is the option to choose between classic braces or removable Invisalign aligners. Both are available at Marconi Dental Group.

A lot of teens opt for Invisalign Teen, because the braces are “invisible.” It won’t impact their speech, eating habits, or oral hygiene. The only thing that needs to be considered is whether or not your child is up to the commitment of wearing their aligners for 20+ hours a day, changing them out routinely, and not losing them at school.

Braces for Adults

Adults have the best of both worlds: they can choose to go the route of wearing conventional braces, invisible Invisalign aligners, or even opt for a quicker, cosmetic option like Six Month Smiles. It all depends on what you’re trying to achieve: aesthetic enhancement or improved overall functionality?

Getting orthodontic treatment like braces or Invisalign can help you better manage problems like gum disease, TMJ disorder, and a risk of decay. Six Month Smiles addresses tooth misalignment toward the front of the mouth, so that you can smile with more confidence.

There are advantages to each type of braces, so it’s up to you and Dr. Alizadeh to assess what your short and long-term goals are, and go from there.

  2. Invisalign Express is usually best for relapse from prior orthodontic treatment or slight crowding concerns.
