When to Call Your Dentist: Is it Really an Emergency?

How can you know whether or not the problem going on with your tooth warrants itself as a true dental emergency? Do you need to get to your dentist right away? Can you wait another day before calling our office? These are all questions that you’ve probably been asking yourself. Unfortunately, dental emergencies can lead to more serious pain and complications if they aren’t looked into quickly.

If you’re unsure as to whether or not it’s a true emergency, ask yourself:

  • Can I go to work (or school) like this?
  • Am I in pain?
  • Can I eat food without the tooth hurting?
  • Does it prevent me from talking?
  • Does it cause extreme embarrassment?
  • Am I experiencing facial swelling?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, regardless of how many, then you need to get access to emergency dental care as quickly as possible. At Marconi Dental Group we want to address things right when they happen, to prevent the situation from becoming more complex. Let’s say that you’ve knocked a tooth loose during a basketball game, or by bumping it from a fall in the bathroom – the faster you get access to care, the more likely we are to help you save your tooth.

Regardless of what time of day it is, please call our Carmichael office right away if you are experiencing a dental emergency. We make every effort to arrange care the very same day – and get you out of pain. If it’s after hours, your call will be rerouted to one of our on-call staff members to answer any questions and provide directions regarding what steps to take next. We’ll work to have you seen immediately on the next business day, and advise you how to manage any discomfort prior to your visit.

Knocked Out Teeth

If you’ve knocked out a tooth, take care to only gently rinse it without scrubbing the root surfaces. If at all possible, place the tooth back into the socket. Doing so immediately can help your body to reattach to the tooth, but waiting too long could inhibit the process. Should you be unable to place the tooth back, store it in a cup of milk or contact solution and bring it to our office immediately.

When You Still Aren’t Sure

There are always instances where our patients may still be uncertain whether or not they or their child are experiencing a true emergency. If this is the case, please don’t risk it – call our office to at least get the peace of mind that you need. Maybe it’s nothing, but maybe it is something that could require a trip to the emergency room if you wait another day.

Marconi Dental Group is here when you need us – because dental emergencies never take vacations. Call our office today, and be sure to ask about our in-house plan for patients who don’t have dental insurance.
