Our Carmichael dentists can offer you two different types of dentures after your teeth are extracted. If your teeth have been missing for some time, however, you may be able to progress directly to the standard denture, for reasons that are elaborated on later in this page. This is because the difference between immediate or conventional dentures involves the healing period after pulling the tooth. When diseased teeth are taken out, the gums require time to heal. Over four to eight weeks, the gums shrink and fill the holes left behind. This process affects the shape of the gums and the jaw.
If You Want Immediate Dentures
During the healing period, you may use immediate dentures. Immediate dentures are formulated before the pulling of your teeth and are available immediately afterward. Since they are based on the expected shape of the oral cavity, they may not be a perfect fit. Then, since the gums naturally shrink, immediate dentures must be customized to fit the new shape of your oral cavity. As an advantage, immediate dentures do what their name suggests — they give you teeth right away. As a disadvantage, they involve more cost and trips to the office of the Marconi Dental Group.
With standard dentures, you are not given false teeth right away. Instead, your gums are allowed to heal first. Then, additional measurements determine the shape of your new dentures. While this does mean going without teeth for a period, when standard dentures are placed, they typically require only minor future adjustments, if any. You also spend less time in the dental office.
Since implants must set in the jawbone before they can bear significant weight (and may also require a bone graft), with implant dentures the therapy is quite similar to that for standard false teeth. Installation of your new implant denture must await a good foundation. This requires a wholly healed jaw. So while patience is necessary for a period, the end results typically bring the greatest satisfaction out of any denture type.
