When Should My Child Have Their First Visit to the Dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children receive their first dental checkup by age one. You may wonder if that’s a bit early – especially if your child only has a few teeth. But there are important reasons to bring your child in for that first visit.

For one, by taking your child to the dentist at an early age, you teach your child that oral health and hygiene are important. The doctor will help make sure that you are using the right oral hygiene techniques. In turn, as you train your children in these techniques, you prepare them for a lifetime of the best oral health possible.

And we’ll make sure to make your child’s first visit a pleasant one.

An additional benefit of an early visit is your child’s dentist has a chance to look for early signs of developmental problems or cavities. Identifying these problems now can prevent major headaches in the future.

The Day of the Visit

A day or two before the visit, start building anticipation with your child. With a smile and warm tone of voice, tell them that soon they will get a chance to visit the special doctor who helps them to have healthy teeth.

You can detail exactly what to expect during that first appointment, which will include:

Feel free to also bring a toy or snack along to help put your child at ease.

What to Expect

During the exam, the dentist will gently probe your child’s mouth to make sure there are no signs of decay and that the teeth and jaw are developing properly. He or she will also look for any warning signs of disease.

Finally, your child’s dentist will share helpful tips to ensure your child’s mouth stays healthy moving forward.

For example, you’ll find out:

Of course, at the end of your visit we’ll answer any of your questions and address any concerns you have about your child’s oral health.
